Bred in 1930 by His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa, Emir of Bahrain, KUHAILAN AFAS was purchased as a yearling by Bogdan Zientarski and Carl Raswan for Prince Roman Sanguszko's Gumniska stud. He is the last original arabian imported directly from the desert to Poland.

His son BAD AFAS 1940 was used at Nowy Dwor where he left two sons for breeding, ARCUS 1947 and ABU AFAS 1947. The first one produced the Derby winner BRANIBOR 1958, who was used as chiefsire in his turn but left no successor. ABU AFAS, for his part, perpetuated the line by siring COMET 1953, but is also the sire of the Oaks and Derby winner mare SABELLINA 1954, who established the best racing damline of the country.

The phenomenal COMET 1953, is considered by many as the best stallion born after World War II and nicknamed "the Sire of the Century". Indeed he sired extraordinary broodmares, full of charm, type and class, who became exceptionnal dams as, between others, EUNICE, the dam of Polish champions EUKALIPTUS and EUROPA ; ARBA, the dam of chiefsires ARGO, ARMANIAK, ARBIL, and European Champion Mare ARRA ; ENGRACJA, mother of chiefsire ERNAL, European Champion ENGANO and European Junior Champion Mare ENKLAWA ; and also WARMIA, the dam of stallions WOROBLIN and WERMUT, and US National Champion Mare WIZJA and Polish Junior Reserve Champion WILEJKA, the dam of Chief Progenitor WOJSLAW.
At the time of his untimely death at 11 years old, 21 of his sons had been exported. Only five of them had been used in breeding without to be able to continue the line. Among them, CARYCYN was certainly the best but nearly all his progeny had been exported before reproduction in Poland, besides OSTRAWA, who produced Polish Reserve Junior Champion OSTROZKA, and Polish National Champion EMISJA, the dam of Michalów's living legend EMIGRACJA.

To reintroduce in Poland the then nearly extinct KUHAILAN AFAS sireline, COMET's grandson PROBAT, bred by Blommeröd stud in Sweden in 1975, was leased to serve mares in Michalów in 1980-81-86 and in Janów in 1982-83-88. The father of PROBAT, Michalów bred POHANIEC, had been exported to Sweden where he won the national title as well as the European Reserve one. PROBAT did his task with perfection, producing numerous show champions like World Champions FAWOR and PIRUET, Polish champions PAMIR, GIL and GARNIZON, and racewinners like BORYSLAW, WERMUT, FAWOR and PAMIR plus other great sires like ENRILO, GWIZD (at Tersk) and ALEGRO. In Poland he produced magnificent champion mares like DIANA, EGZOTYKA, ALMERIA, PISTACJA, GASKONIA and PIKIETA as well as phenomenal broodmares like EGZOTYKA, dam of European champion ESKALOPKA, Swedish National Champion EWAKUACJA and Warsaw Champion Mare EGZONERA ; FANABERIA, the dam of World Reserve and Polish National Champion mare FALLADA ; and GASKONIA, the mother of 3 stallions, Polish Reserve Champion GRAFIK, Double Polish National Champion GASPAR and GASKONCZYK, exported to Germany. In Sweden, four PROBAT daughters won the national title, PRUSNEGA, PRUSJA, PROSBA, and our NAUTICIA. His son PIONIER was also Swedish National Champion.

Twelve PROBAT sons have been used in the Polish breeding program. The bests will certainly remain the two national and international champions FAWOR and PAMIR. FAWOR is the father of numerous champions like ALBULA, ALBIGOWA, FORTISSIMA, SAZSA, BOREK and PILAR. His best son, Polish Junior Champion and international multichampion PILOT 1987, was sold to Paolo Gucci at 3, but was recently leased back to serve mares in Janów Podlaski as was also his own son HS PIRANDELO one year later.
Sold for 100.000$ to Brazil in 2000, PAMIR is, for his part, the father of great show horses but also race champions like the etheral European Champion mare EMILDA, Polish National Champion and Derby Winner BATYSKAF, sold to Turkish Jockey Club for 450.000$, 1995 Race Horse of the Year GEPARD, and Scandinavian Reserve Champion ALT. After BATYSKAF, it is PIBER (out of PILINA) who is in charge to continue his line.
The other PROBAT grandsons who also served at stud are Polish Reserve National Champions ANGOR and EUROL by ALEGRO, EGON by ENRILO, race winner BOREK by FAWOR and Derby winner DZIEWIERZ by WERMUT.

As you can see, the KUHAILAN AFAS sireline, has in history, alternated glorious and less fastous periods. Who will be, after COMET and PROBAT, the next exceptionnal progenitor belonging to this sireline ?
